Apples – Did You Know?

Did You Know there’s a whole family of apples?

It’s a really large family. It’s alike in some ways but quite different in others.

In the ‘alike department’ apples are round, but some are stretched out and may even have points on the bottom. Some are red, some are green, some are yellow, some are bi-color and there’s even a pink one. In the near future there will probably be an apple which is red inside!

A robust history said to go back to a garden setting, the list of apple varieties numbers in the thousands. A most flavorful family, quite possibly like yours, apples come in sweet, tart and even sweet/tart.

The power of those favors also vary in intensity with some apples seeming to bite back when you bite into them. Along with color and flavor, there’s also the crunch. A powerful mouth feel and a satisfying sound, this part of any apple’s personality rates high in a number of respects with its measurement of freshness leading the way to additional crunches.

This is also a family where the different members have flavor and crispness best suited to different eating ‘experiences.’ Some shine more than others eaten fresh out of hand, some are better when cooked in various tasty dishes and a few will do well fresh or prepared.

The apple family is also a friendly group and at a time when it’s more important than ever. With time being tight every member of the family aims to please. Just grab, wash and enjoy. Not to worry, the core is biodegradable. If the apple family had a universal name, it would be ‘Convenient Snack’ or C.S. for short.

You’ll notice there’s no mention of apples being healthy. Or providing a host of healthful benefits. No need to point out the obvious.

If you’re looking for a creative way to crunch into this tasty snack, The Apple Crunch Food Day might be a fun treat. This activity has spread across the country in recent years, and thousands of locations had Apple Crunches for Food Day 2014. This year, Food Day is hosting a nationwide Food Day Apple Crunch on October 24. Visit the Apple Crunch website for more information and to sign up!

This Is Pink Lady®: Just reaching the four million box level, the Pink Lady® Brand Apple is the only truly pink apple in the supermarket produce department. The Pink Lady is known for its sweet/tart flavor and very crisp texture. It is slow to turn brown when cut. Used mostly for out-of-hand fresh eating, this apple is also good for home cooking. It’s also seeing growth in the processing industry where it’s popular sold as juice or as sliced.
