The program was developed by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eatright.org\/\">Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation<\/a> (formerly the American Dietetic Association Foundation) in collaboration with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.healthychildrenhealthyfutures.org\/\">Healthy Children Healthy Futures<\/a> and has been funded for the past two years by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metlife.com\/about\/corporate-profile\/citizenship\/metlife-foundation\/index.html\">MetLife Foundation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2537 aligncenter\" title=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/togethercounts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/15.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"586\" height=\"390\" srcset=\"https:\/\/togethercounts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/15.jpg 733w, https:\/\/togethercounts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/15-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 586px) 100vw, 586px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Through interactive parent workshops and hands-on cooking activities with their children, parents have made important changes in their family\u2019s eating and physical activity habits. A major focus of the parent workshops is on the 8 Habits of Healthy Children and Families\u2122 based on what research shows to promote healthy body weight in children.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>8 Habits of Healthy Children and Families<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Be physically active at least one hour a day<\/li>\n<li>Spend less than two hours a day on electronic equipment<\/li>\n<li>Eat a nutritious breakfast every day<\/li>\n<li>Eat vegetables and fruits with meals and snacks<\/li>\n<li>Make time for nutritious family meals at home<\/li>\n<li>Be wise about portion size<\/li>\n<li>Drink more liquids, such as low-fat or fat-free milk<\/li>\n<li>Ensure regular bed time for your kids to include at least nine hours of sleep every night<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>(See also <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/togethercounts.com\/teaching-kids-the-importance-of-balance\/\"><strong>Teaching Kids Life Balance<\/strong><\/a><strong>)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As parents learn practical tips for making healthful eating and physical activity changes, they start to form new family habits. These habits may start at home, for example, parents offering more fruits and vegetables at dinner, or outside of the home, too. Families can order smaller portions when dining out, and children can be smart about the choices they make at school.
