Organized soccer games, playing tag on the playground, competitions over who can swing higher\u2014it\u2019s that unstructured, long-awaited time during the day where kids get to be, well, kids. Just last month, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) placed a stamp of approval on it, releasing a new policy statement in its journal, <em>Pediatrics<\/em>, saying \u201crecess serves as a necessary break from the rigors of concentrated, academic challenges in the classroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/togethercounts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/22.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2683\" title=\"2\" src=\"https:\/\/togethercounts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/22.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/togethercounts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/22.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/togethercounts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/22-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/togethercounts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/22-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>(see <a href=\"https:\/\/togethercounts.com\/2013-healthy-playground-makeover\/\">2013 Healthy Playground Makeover<\/a>)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Many parents are unaware that some states don\u2019t require its schools to allot time for recess. Perhaps you are now questioning if physical activities or other opportunities for classroom physical activity breaks are mandated in your state, or wonder if your child\u2019s school meets the nationally recommended minutes per week for physical education. Enter the 2012 <em>Shape of the Nation Report: Status of Physical Education in the USA<\/em>. The National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) recently released an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aahperd.org\/naspe\/publications\/shape-of-the-nation-infographic.cfm\">infographic<\/a> illustrating its national survey findings. Amongst the findings is that only nine states require elementary schools to provide recess and only six states require physical education in every grade.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/togethercounts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/15.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2678\" title=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/togethercounts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/15.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"572\" height=\"1582\" srcset=\"https:\/\/togethercounts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/15.jpg 715w, https:\/\/togethercounts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/15-108x300.jpg 108w, https:\/\/togethercounts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/15-370x1024.jpg 370w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 572px) 100vw, 572px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>(see <a href=\"https:\/\/togethercounts.com\/be-an-example\/\">Be an Example<\/a>) <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Be a Recess Advocate:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Are your children getting their recommended 60 minutes of physical activity every day in school? Parents have an opportunity to use these findings to help eliminate loopholes in the school system.
