When you hear the term 4G you might think it\u2019s in relation to the speed of a phone, but that\u2019s the exact opposite of what I mean when I say I\u2019m a member of the 4Gs. As\u00a0 a member of the\u00a0 4Gs, I\u2019m a dedicated walker. Four generations\u00a0 of\u00a0 active family members who realize that walking is key to a\u00a0 healthy lifestyle. There\u2019s my 85-year-old mother, 63-year-old me, my\u00a0 33-year-old daughter, and Em, my four-year-old granddaughter. We were dubbed the 4Gs by my sister, Sue Parks, who is\u00a0 the\u00a0 founder and\u00a0 CEO of WalkStyles. Our mission is to keep on walking and get others to do the same.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s all sweet\u00a0 and good, but there\u2019s a dark side\u00a0 to\u00a0 my\u00a0 story. I\u2019m battling an addiction to a very powerful force:\u00a0 Words with Friends.\u00a0 This is how bad it can be:\u00a0 I wake\u00a0 up in the middle of the night and immediately reach for my iPhone,fire up the WWF app, and\u00a0 jump\u00a0 right into a game. I can entertain myself for hours making words and racking up points.\u00a0 Delayed flights, long stints in the dentist\u2019s waiting room, and\u00a0 a slow-moving line at the grocery store\u00a0 \u2026 not a problem.\u00a0 I have Words and Friends (some real, some random) to keep me company. I rationalize it as brain exercise while studying\u00a0 a small screen and dragging letters\u00a0 to utilize a triple-word square. In spite of this addiction, I do get in my 10,000 daily steps, sometimes with my head\u00a0 bent over the\u00a0 phone.<\/p>\n

I definitely\u00a0 needed to overcome my obsession, and my grandaughter helped me\u00a0 do it. She and\u00a0 I had strolled to the neighborhood park. While\u00a0 Em amused herself\u00a0 on the\u00a0 playground equipment, I\u00a0 sat down on a bench, pulled\u00a0 out\u00a0 my phone\u00a0 and, with one\u00a0 eye\u00a0 on her and\u00a0 one\u00a0 eye on the teeny\u00a0 game board, I started a\u00a0 game\u00a0 with\u00a0 my fiercest competitor. \u00a0After a\u00a0 bit,\u00a0 Em grew bored\u00a0 playing alone, sat down next\u00a0 to me and offered to help.While\u00a0 Em worked on her\u00a0 assignment, I looked around the park:\u00a0 It\u00a0 was green and peaceful\u00a0 and\u00a0 pretty. On the lake, ducks\u00a0 were\u00a0 congregating and a\u00a0 few\u00a0 boys were launching a small sailboat.\u00a0 Em brought me back to the game\u00a0 by announcing, \u201cGrandma, I\u2019m done.\u201d\u00a0 Looking at the screen, I noted that indeed\u00a0 it was no longer my\u00a0 turn and that the best letter hadn\u2019t been\u00a0 played.\u00a0\u00a0 Deep breath.\u00a0 Then another, deeper, breath. \u201cWow!\u00a0 Great job, Em!\u201d I choked out after\u00a0 several\u00a0 seconds\u00a0 had passed.\u00a0 \u201cLet\u2019s put the phone away\u00a0 for now and walk\u00a0 around the lake.\u00a0 Let\u2019s see what\u2019s going on over there with that\u00a0 sailboat.\u201d\u00a0 Without missing a beat, she was off and running.<\/p>\n

This is what I discovered on our walk that day:\u00a0 Sometimes I pay too much\u00a0 attention to a\u00a0\u00a0 device\u00a0 and not\u00a0 enough to the world and the people around\u00a0 me.\u00a0 WWF took on a much healthier meaning: Walking With Family. \u00a0We were thrilled to discover the Together Counts ProgramTM <\/sup>also shares this belief by promoting family meals and activities. Together we can put down our digital devices for a period of time and get outside instead.<\/p>\n

How do you turn digital distractions into a rewarding family activity for the entire family?<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to her mother, Nancy \u00a0started walking at the age of 13 months. She has enjoyed this activity ever since and has worn out hundreds of shoes. A retired teacher and active grandmother, Nancy added \u00abblogger\u00bb to resume several months ago with her sister’s encouragement.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n
