Most people would rather stay inside, veg out on the couch, and call it a day. But these kinds of activities don\u2019t support your physical or mental health. As a partner of the Together Counts\u2122 program for healthy, active living, we know there are <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sparkpe.org\/blog\/8-ways-to-keep-your-kids-active-indoors\/\">numerous indoor activities<\/a> <\/span>that can be a good substitute for more typical outdoor sports during the winter months.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>SPARK Lesson Plans<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If your students are unwilling to go outside, there are several different games\/activities that can be played indoors with little equipment. We\u2019ve put together a collection of lesson plans that are perfect for indoor winter activities. Here are a few worth your attention:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rock-Paper-Scissors Tag<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In this game, kids partner up, play rock-paper-scissors at the midline, then whoever wins is \u201cIT.\u201d This person chases other players towards the endline. A point goes to the chaser if they tag a runner; a point goes to the runner if they make it safely to the endline. You\u2019ll need <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/store.schoolspecialty.com\/OA_HTML\/ibeCCtpItmDspRte.jsp?minisite=10206&amp;item=3257219\">cones<\/a><\/span>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/store.schoolspecialty.com\/OA_HTML\/ibeCCtpItmDspRte.jsp?minisite=10206&amp;item=3256445\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">flag belt<\/span>s<\/a> are suggested.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Paper Plate Aerobics<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In this game, kids must keep a paper plate underneath each foot while doing some sort of movement. Examples include lunges, push-ups and crunches. You could also have students use a <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/store.schoolspecialty.com\/OA_HTML\/ibeCCtpItmDspRte.jsp?minisite=10206&amp;item=86152\">softball<\/a> <\/span>and play catch with a couple others, without lifting feet off the plates.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Toy\u2019s Alive!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In this game, everyone spreads out and pretends they are a toy (like in Toy Story). When they hear \u201cAndy\u2019s coming!\u201d they must freeze in position. Students count down from three to one and wait to hear \u201cAll Clear!\u201d to move again. In order to move, they must use a <a href=\"https:\/\/store.schoolspecialty.com\/OA_HTML\/ibeCCtpItmDspRte.jsp?minisite=10206&amp;item=87644\">bean bag<\/a> as a \u201cbattery,\u201d balanced on their head or shoulder. If the bean bag falls, the student must freeze until another toy-student helps them out. You\u2019ll need <a href=\"https:\/\/store.schoolspecialty.com\/OA_HTML\/ibeCCtpItmDspRte.jsp?minisite=10206&amp;item=3257219\">cones<\/a> and bean bags for this activity.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>YMCA\u2019s, Open Gyms and Community Centers<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Encourage students to take fitness into their own hands, outside of school. During the winter season, there\u2019s a lot of time over break that should be used to constructively balance holiday indulgence.<\/p>\n<p>YMCA\u2019s offer a multitude of options for indoor activities that vary depending on the location. A few different things that may be available at your local YMCA:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gymnastics, swim classes, youth fitness classes (yoga, dance, Zumba)<\/li>\n<li>Sports; basketball, flag football, volleyball, martial arts, running<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Besides YMCA\u2019s, open gyms, usually reserved for basketball, are \u201copen\u201d for anyone to use. They can also have space for gymnastics or volleyball nets. This is a great option to suggest to students with specific activity preferences.<\/p>\n<p>Local community centers offer a variety of different activity options that are similar to what a local YMCA might provide. A local community center might offer martial arts, dance classes and various sports teams to sign up for. But staying active doesn\u2019t always mean doing a sport or exercise class. Another \u201cactivity\u201d might be something like taking a cooking class as a family at a community center.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Bowling\/Indoor Rollerblading\/Indoor Trampoline<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The best way to get a student to exercise? Make it seem like something that\u2019s more \u201cfun\u201d than \u201cwork.\u201d A few ideas to suggest for staying active in winter:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bowling<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sparkpe.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/3-6_aerobic_bowling.pdf\">Bowling gets you up and moving<\/a><\/span>, plus it\u2019s fun. You don\u2019t have to be great at bowling, and there are bumpers on the lanes for kids. It\u2019s also relatively inexpensive!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Indoor Rollerblading<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Students may claim it\u2019s too cold to go outside to ice skate, so encourage them to opt instead for indoor rollerblading or rollerskating. There are many health benefits associated with <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.healthfitnessrevolution.com\/top-10-health-benefits-roller-skating\/\">rollerblading<\/a><\/span>: it\u2019s easier on the joints, improves your overall mood, and can also help with endurance and agility.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Indoor Trampoline<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Indoor trampoline parks are getting more and more popular. It\u2019s an indoor park composed of trampolines and a pit of foam cubes to jump into. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.springfit.org\/activities\/trampolining\/benefits-of-trampolining\/\">Trampolining<\/a> <\/span>is a great way to get kids active! Did you know that a ten minute bounce is the same as a half hour run?<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Outdoor Activities<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Just because it\u2019s winter doesn\u2019t mean you HAVE to be stuck inside! There are many activities to do outside that kids, and parents, can enjoy. Some suggestions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Build a snowman or snow fort<\/li>\n<li>Go skiing, sledding or snowboarding<\/li>\n<li>Bundle up and go for a walk<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Indoor Activities<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We aren\u2019t out of ideas for staying active in the winter yet! Here are some indoor activities to suggest to students that will probably please their parents.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cleaning the House<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t have to be a chore! You can do a couple things to make this fun:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Make it a game: whoever cleans their bedroom the fastest (an adult has to approve of thoroughness) gets a simple reward (like their choice for dinner).<\/li>\n<li>Turn the cleaning into a dance party and blast some tunes.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Cooking\/Baking<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cooking and baking can really get you moving in the kitchen. You can turn it into family time as well and cook\/bake together. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sparkpe.org\/safe-and-healthy-students\/nutrition-services\/\">Learning to cook and manage your nutrition is not only a valuable skill<\/a><\/span>, it\u2019s also something fun to do when it\u2019s freezing outside.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Active Video Games<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Many gaming consoles have active video games kids can play, providing them with plenty of options. You might also suggest <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sparkpe.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/05DanceElecSlideCardio.pdf\">dancing games<\/a><\/span> like Zumba and Just Dance.<\/p>\n<p>Staying active during the winter is difficult for many, and being cooped up isn\u2019t fun either. But staying active in winter helps physical health as well as mental health.
