Creating a New “Play List”

Earlier this Summer I attended the EVO Conference in Park City, Utah. I was struck by many memorable moments, but one message truly stuck out in my mind. During the keynote address, Meredith Sinclair, blogger for hoo-dee-hoo.com, highlighted that at a certain age we forget how to play. The gift that comes so natural to us as children gets lost behind responsibility, parenting and the fact that it’s not “socially acceptable” at a certain age.

As a twenty-something, I’m beginning to enter the structure and formality of adulthood. Life can become hectic in the blink of an eye, and I often feel so distant from the simple, carefree life of days gone by. As I sat in the keynote during EVO, I listened to Meredith describe how she redefined her life by creating a new “play list,” and I felt inspired to create my own.

There will always be excuses that stop us from setting time aside to cut loose, but imagine how freeing it would be to stop watching your kids play and just join in. I created my new “play list” below, and I encourage you to create one as well.

1) Have a snowball fight this winter.

2) Make a mess in the kitchen.

3) Dance like crazy

4) Jump in a pile of leaves this Fall.

5) Jump Rope

6) Swing

7) Take a hike

I’m going to hang this on my fridge and whenever life get’s hectic, I’m going to take a deep breath and go have some fun.

What’s on your “play list?”

Diana Kelter wrote this post for Together Counts on behalf of Edelman Digital and looks forward to playing in a pile of leaves this Fall.
