Exercising With A Busy Schedule

Question: I understand that exercise is really important, but no matter how hard I try, I can’t seem to fit a full workout into my busy schedule. What are some things I can do to stay in shape without going to the gym?

Answer: It’s great that you recognize how important physical activity is, and you want to fit exercise into your daily routine. As a Together Counts™ program partner encouraging healthy, active living, we know any time is a great time to focus on fitness. The USDA recommends that adults get two and a half hours of moderate physical activity every week, and it doesn’t matter how you fit them into your schedule. A full 30-minute workout, two 15- minute sessions, or three 10-minute sessions per day for five days a week will help you reach that goal. You don’t need to go to the gym for moderate exercise. In fact, walking at a quick pace is a great way to keep your body in shape! Here are some practical ways to add more physical activity to your daily routine.

  • Instead of searching for the closest parking spot, park farther away and walk briskly to the entrance.
  • Choose the stairs over elevators and escalators.
  • Go for a brisk 15-minute walk during your lunch break.
  • Don’t use the drive-thru if you’re not in a hurry. Instead, park and walk.
  • Play with your kids — ride bikes, play tag or kick around a soccer ball.
  • Do sit-ups, jumping jacks, or household chores during TV commercials.
  • Instead of meeting a friend for coffee, invite him or her for a walk in the park. Ride bikes, play tag, or kick around a soccer ball.
  • Jump rope for a quick and inexpensive cardio workout.
