Commit to Be Fit

FCCLA’s national program Student Body is a peer education program designed to teach students how to make informed, responsible decisions about their health and provide opportunities for youth to teach others about making healthy choices. Chapters perform programs in their communities to educate about important issues affecting families. In line with how the Healthy Weight Commit Foundation’s Together Counts™ program encourages a healthy, active lifestyle, Student Body focuses on incorporating active and healthy living in all aspects of your life.

Through a partnership with the Tennessee Brighton Elementary School Physical Education Department, members of the Brighton High School FCCLA chapter held a program called “Commit to Be Fit Day”. Their goal was to teach the students about health and fitness. On the day of the program FCCLA members conveyed through discussion and games such as, Eat the Rainbow and Exercise Ball, how physical fitness and nutrition play a key role in daily well-being. The elementary school students who participated were asked to sign a “Commit to Be Fit” Pledge and agreed to take small steps toward making healthy choices and living active lives. Before ending the day, FCCLA members put up a bulletin board as a daily reminder to use small steps when making dietary choices. Feedback after the program showed that it had been very successful. Students reported sharing what they had learned at school with their families. Families as a result, began implementing healthier choices in their own homes in Tennessee.

How are you and your family taking small steps toward your commitment to fitness? Whether you are engaging in moderate activities like a walk or hike after dinner, visiting your local parks or doing yard work, every step counts toward a healthy and active lifestyle!
