7 Tips for Successful Staycations

If your budget is tight this year, consider exploring your city from the comfort of your own home.  Staycations have become very popular, but in order to make your staycation a true vacation you need a plan. Here are seven tips for having a successful, fun and relaxing staycation.

 1) Make a List

Plan your staycation like you would any vacation. Make a list of everything you want to do and ask the kids how they want to spend the staycation too. There might be a special museum or park they’ve always wanted to visit or a hiking trail yet to be discovered. Getting the whole family involved will make your staycation something everyone enjoys!

2) Budget for Your Staycation

Your budget will probably determine the types of activities you plan, but whether it’s big or small, you can still have a great time. Check out daily deal sites like Living Social and Groupon to find fun activities at a fraction of the cost. Consider purchasing a family membership to a local zoo, amusement park or museum to save even more and continue to enjoy your membership throughout the year. Also, be sure to budget for meals as well as activities, as these can add up for a large family.

Remember you can staycation right in your own backyard or visit a neighboring city or a daytrip. There are many fun family activities you do right in your own neighborhood and they don’t cost a penny!

3) Plan Easy Meals

To really enjoy your staycation, you’ll probably want to take a vacation from making dinner. Plan easy meals or make ones ahead and freeze them so all you need to do is heat and serve. If you can afford it, plan a couple of meals out to get a vacation from the kitchen.

4) Make it a Chore Free Weekend

You don’t usually vacuum and mop a hotel room, so you probably shouldn’t be doing those things during your staycation. Get your house in order before your staycation begins so you can spend your time enjoying your family and not worrying about laundry or windows.

5) Step Away from Electronics
A vacation is a great way to take a technology break and connect with your family. A staycation is no different. Even though you’re still at home, disconnect from any technology that keeps you from spending time together. Perhaps you’ve planned a Wii boxing marathon or movie night, but if not, make sure you take a vacation from technology so you can focus on being with your family.

6) Take Pictures

You’ll want to remember this staycation just like you would a regular vacation. Make sure your camera battery is charged and that you’re ready to capture all the amazing memories you’ll make.

7) Plan to Relax

Remember this is supposed to be a vacation, not a “cram everything you’ve ever wanted to do in your city” event. Make sure you schedule down time – you might even get to sleep in!
