New Eating Habits for a New Lifestyle

Friendship is essential to the soul, and I can speak from experience and honestly say my friends are a special and unique breed.

While I’ve relied on their support in more ways than I can count, soliciting support for my eating habits hasn’t been one of them. Quite the opposite, actually, with remarks like, “Nakea, you can eat anything. You’re skinny!” From ribs and lasagna to strawberry shortcake and banana pudding, I ate whatever my heart desired and was fortunate enough to not gain weight. My dad warned me, though, that my metabolism would one day slow down and catch up with me…boy was he right!

I recently moved to Chicago and quickly immersed myself in the delicious eateries the city had to offer. Every day I traveled to a new restaurant in a different part of town and indulged in the taste of Chicago. I can’t help it, I LOVE TO EAT! But, I didn’t realize how bad my eating habits had spun out of control: I would eat breakfast, then lunch, snack all day at work and then go home for dinner (and more snacking). After a few weeks of bliss, I noticed I was clearly gaining weight when I could barely fit into the jeans I had worn only a few months prior.

It was time for me to really re-evaluate my approach to meals. My plan moving forward would be an hour of cardio a day after work and truly keeping an eye on how much I eat – calories in, calories out. This is not to say I’ve stopped eating certain foods, but smaller portions are a priority. Each day is a step towards the pathway to a new, improved and healthier me!

What self-improvement have you made that makes you a better you?
